Introduction
The short answer is no: an official UFO file does not, by itself, prove that an unusual craft was present in Western Australian skies. The WA Police UFO File is important because it confirms that people made reports, that police officers recorded them, and that some cases were considered serious enough to be passed through official channels. What it does not confirm is the accuracy of every observation or the existence of an extraordinary object. The distinction matters because much of the public discussion around UFO records confuses documentation with verification. The value of the file lies in showing what witnesses claimed to have seen and how authorities responded, not in providing conclusive proof of unidentified technology. Within Western Australia’s UFO history, the file is best understood as evidence that reports existed and were investigated to varying degrees. Whether those reports represent unusual aircraft, astronomical events, misidentifications, hoaxes, or genuinely unresolved incidents is a separate question that must be judged case by case.
What an official record actually confirms
When a sighting appears in the WA Police UFO File, several things can usually be said with confidence.
First, a report was made to an official authority. Second, a police officer or administrator considered it worth recording. Third, details such as time, location, witness descriptions and sometimes assessments of witness reliability entered the documentary record. These are valuable historical facts. They tell us that an event occurred in the social sense: someone reported seeing something unusual. [ABC News]abc.net.auABC News'UFO file' sheds light on strange encounters in Western…27 Jul 2020 — The UFO file holds dozens of police reports linked to si…
What the record does not automatically establish is that the object was actually present as described. Human perception is imperfect, especially at night, over long distances, or when witnesses are confronted with unfamiliar lights and atmospheric effects. A police report can accurately record a witness statement while the witness interpretation remains mistaken.
This distinction is common in many areas of investigation. A crime report confirms that a complaint was lodged; it does not prove the complaint’s allegations. In the same way, a UFO report confirms that an observation was reported; it does not prove the observer’s explanation.
For historians of Western Australian UFO reports, the file’s greatest strength is therefore documentary rather than evidential. It preserves testimony that might otherwise have disappeared.
Why many reports stayed unresolved
One reason the WA Police UFO File remains interesting is that many reports were never conclusively explained. However, “unresolved” is not the same as “confirmed”.
Most sightings in the file were recorded before the era of mobile-phone cameras, widespread civilian radar access, satellite-tracking apps and digital astronomical databases. Investigators often had only witness recollections, sometimes gathered hours or days after the event. Physical evidence was usually absent. Photographs were rare. Independent instrument records were rarer still. As a result, many cases fell into one of three broad categories:
- Explained cases, where later information suggested aircraft, planets, meteors, balloons or other ordinary causes.
- Insufficient-information cases, where there was simply not enough evidence to reach a conclusion.
- Unresolved cases, where available information did not support a confident explanation.
The third category often attracts the most attention, but it can be misleading. An unresolved case may remain unexplained because evidence is weak, not because the event was extraordinary. A missing answer is not the same thing as proof of a remarkable phenomenon.
This is one of the most important lessons from official UFO archives worldwide. Files often contain genuine mysteries, but mysteries are not automatically evidence of advanced craft or non-human technology.
How RAAF practice supports a cautious reading
The Royal Australian Air Force’s historical approach to UFO reports provides a useful guide for interpreting the WA Police records.
During the Cold War, the RAAF collected and assessed reports because unidentified aerial observations could potentially have air-defence implications. Its interest was primarily practical and security-related rather than an attempt to prove extraordinary claims. Archived Defence records indicate that the RAAF’s concern was whether sightings represented something relevant to national defence, not whether they demonstrated alien visitation. [documents.theblackvault.com]documents.theblackvault.com000July 28, 2013 — RAAF publish a list of identifications of all UFO sightings from 1960 to 1965. Letter from A Sec A to Minister for Air…
Importantly, RAAF files show a long-standing effort to identify reports whenever possible. Large numbers of sightings received conventional explanations, while only a small minority remained officially listed as unknown. Even those unknown cases were not treated as confirmation of exotic craft; they were simply cases where available information did not permit a satisfactory identification. [documents.theblackvault.com]documents.theblackvault.com000July 28, 2013 — RAAF publish a list of identifications of all UFO sightings from 1960 to 1965. Letter from A Sec A to Minister for Air…
The Dalwallinu case and similar Western Australian reports illustrate this approach. Authorities sought witness statements, locations, timings and descriptive details. The goal was evidence gathering. The existence of that process demonstrates official interest and procedural seriousness, but not official endorsement of extraordinary conclusions. In fact, later Defence policy moved increasingly towards the view that public UFO reports did not justify dedicated investigation resources, and formal collection of civilian reports eventually ceased. That shift reflected a judgement about evidential value rather than an admission that unusual craft had been confirmed. The most common misunderstanding: official does not mean verified
A recurring misunderstanding in discussions of the WA Police UFO File is the assumption that an official archive gives official endorsement.
The file certainly adds credibility to the historical fact that sightings were reported. It may also increase confidence that some witnesses were interviewed carefully and that details were recorded close to the time of the event. Yet none of that transforms a report into proof.
A useful way to think about the file is as a collection of claims that passed through a government reporting system. The system confirms the existence of the claims. It does not automatically confirm the claims themselves.
This distinction becomes especially important when later retellings exaggerate what records show. A document stating that a witness observed a bright object changing direction is evidence that the witness reported such behaviour. It is not independent proof that the object actually moved in that way. Additional evidence—such as radar data, multiple independent measurements, physical traces or high-quality imagery—would be needed to move beyond testimony alone.
What the WA Police file ultimately tells us
The WA Police UFO File remains one of the most valuable sources for understanding Western Australia’s UFO history because it captures how unusual aerial reports entered official channels and how authorities responded. It demonstrates that sightings were widespread enough to generate paperwork, correspondence and occasional follow-up inquiries. [ABC News]abc.net.auABC News'UFO file' sheds light on strange encounters in Western…27 Jul 2020 — The UFO file holds dozens of police reports linked to si…
Its significance lies in documentation, not confirmation. The file proves that reports existed, that witnesses came forward, and that police and sometimes Defence personnel took those reports seriously enough to record them. It does not prove that witnesses correctly interpreted what they saw, nor does it establish the presence of extraordinary craft.
For readers exploring Western Australia’s UFO history, that distinction is essential. The archive is genuine. The reports are real. The evidence for what caused many of those reports remains far less certain.
