Introduction
The northern Tasmanian sighting wave centred on Launceston is often presented as one of the state’s most notable UFO clusters. Yet the official record tells a more cautious story. When Australian Department of Air files are examined, many of the reports that helped create the impression of a concentrated UFO wave were accompanied by ordinary probable causes. Rather than treating the sightings as evidence of a single unexplained phenomenon, officials frequently linked them to astronomical objects, atmospheric effects, balloons, aircraft and even birds. The Launceston cluster is a useful example of how UFO waves can change when official records become available. A concentration of reports may be real in the sense that many people reported unusual things at roughly the same time. Yet the reports do not necessarily point to a single unexplained cause.
